The team at Jane K. Cristal, P.C. is proud to announce that Attorney Cristal's article, "College Expenses: A Legal Quagmire for Divorced Spouses," was recently featured in Nassau Lawyer (May 2014, Vol. 63, No. 9), the Journal of the Nassau County Bar Association. In this article, Jane discusses the ever-increasing financial burden of college expenses and the changes in statutory laws that have authorized courts to "direct a parent to contribute to a child's private college education."
Prior to 1989, this was not the case. With the costs of a college education continuing to skyrocket, however, it seems that such a change was necessary. Now, parents can expect to pay an average of $40,917 per year for room and board at a private college, $31,701 per year for a public out-of-state college or $18,391 per year for a public in-state college.
